The Principles making Flat Design remain its throne in 2015

Thanks to the multi-billion dollar marketing campaign of Microsoft Co. ,Flat Design has claimed its throne worldwide in the new era of Web designing since the massive success of Windows 8 (UI). Designer and Developers are becoming familiar with this utilirian style design web. For instance, almost Joomla templates or wordpress themes of ZooTemplate and RiverTheme are released with such design style not to mention supported widely by our members. This probably means that, Flat Design itself must have its own principles which appears to be pretty impressive and attractive to users, on the utilitarian ground.

Below is a little review on those principle to make it clearer about the attraction of this new trend.

Absence of depth

This two-dimensional style has offically put an end to the era of depth web design. The absence of depth is caused by the turning away from the use of drop shadows, strokes or other regular design elements used in Skeuomorphistic design, where images are made to imitate the shape, color and the utilization of a real – word object. Flat Design focuses on the simplification of images without adding any shadows or gradient or strokes to the objects to make real-world visual effects. We could bring back a prime example of Apple to compare the difference of depth between Flat Design and intricate Design which is the revolution from IO6 to IOS 7.

While IOS 6 have a strongly intricate style of design where every objects is illustrated carefully with visual effects not to mention the use of 3d computer-generated images, the use of gradients, textures, strokes, bevels, for these and other reason, IOS 6 bring to Iphone a very realistic, flashy but complex look to Iphone 4S;  IOS 7 is revolutionised with two-dimensional style which gets rid of any 3D elements design, use more basic colors. The depth is offically dropped out to create a more simple but modern look to Iphone 5 and the following series of this products.

Use of simple elements

Like mentioning above, Flat design get rids of 3D elements or drop shadow, strokes, this also means that the designers have to  use many simple user interface elements, such as buttons and icons. Designers often stick to basic shapes, such as rectangles, circles or squares and allow each shape to stand alone. The purpose of such simple shapes is to make it easier to click and tap. Even the users who are not familiar with the devices could figure out what icon for what functions without any in-design explaination just by recognizing the icons or button. For examlpe, by judging the gears icon, we could figure out its is the Setting menu. The simpler it is, the easier for us to use.

However, Never mistake Simple elements with simple design. Because simple element is only the materials to serve the purpose of easy-using for users, to code or to create such style needs a lot of effort and creativity like any other complex design as well.

Typography focusing

Because the absence of depth and complex visual effect, typographies step up to take a very important role in flat designs to create its attractive looks. Using typographies wisely adds style even only with natural  texts and gives you a reader-friendly interface. The secrets is to use crisp and clear font texts with shorter messages and chromatically placed with color and shapes. Forget about the  highly embellished font on the grounds that it would be ridiculously odd when putting in a super-simple overview. A very simple fonts such as sans serif or Calibry would bring stunning efficience. However, it does not mean that you can not go gold with novelty fonts, a little touch of extraordinary elements could create more artistic look. Just always bear in mind that, never go too much on that because in Flat Design there is a number rule: Less is more

Colors is important key

It could be considered that colors is one of the most essential elements to bring Flat design to life. Due to the simplicification of style,  a wide range of secondary colors would be needed to embellish the outlook. Color palettes for flat design projects often contain many more hues as well. While most color palettes focus on two or three colors at most, flat design palettes may use six to eight colors equally.  It is not difficult to recognize that colors decorated in such design usualy come in brighter shades than those in other sites. But it would be not wise to use too much bright colors such as yellow or neon yellow green, purple or bright orange, because it would turn the whole site into an exhibition of glares which you would not want. Thus, It it recommended to use candy colours which is more aesthetical and cuter.

You could find this prime example for that in our ZooTemplate with plenty of bright responsive Joomla templates.

Minimalism Approach

The key to success of Flat design is that it is save a lot of space to let your work centerstaged and its minimalist is the art of de-cluttering your pages. It  is simple by nature and works well with an overall minimalist design approach. The suggestion when using flat design is to make it to its most potential by avoiding too many bells or whistles in the overall site. Leave empty space to give padding or breathing room for your texts and suggests a typographical peace.

In conlusions, As simple as it look, Flat Design is still a huge breakthroug of creativity designing work which gives the priority to users utilization. This style of design has started a new era of cleaner, fresher and more modern websites or device interfaces.
