How to make Menu item active?

Hello.....

Welll i have a query which goes this way...I have a menu category menu displayed on left side of website......For ex following is the menu smaple content.

Item 1
---Item11
---Item12
---Item13
---Item14
---Item15
Item2
---Item21
---Item22
---Item23
---Item24

now my requirement is when i click on Main horizontal menu having Item1 then following way the menu should be displayed
Item 1
---Item11
---Item12
---Item13
---Item14
---Item15
Item2


and when i click on Item2 then menu should display in below way

Item 1
Item2
---Item21
---Item22
---Item23
---Item24


so can anyone help me out how to achieve the above requirement...
